Hello Lovelies,
Have you heard of the French astronomer who loved cats so much that he wanted to represent them in the stars? In 1799 Jeremy Lalande decided that he was going to create a constellation called Files. Which in Latin translates to cat. Jeremy chose the name for his constellation not only to honor cats due to his love or them. But also, because he believed that cats deserve to be immortalized in stars.
Felis could be seen between the Hydra and Antlia constellation. At first the constellation was represented in the Uranographia Astrorum Descriptio around 1801. However, in 1930 the Felis constellation was unjustly left out of the list of common constellations. Which we believe is an absolute mistake! Who doesn't want a cat constellation in the sky.
Many years later the IAU or International Astronomical Union named the star HD-8595 after the Felis constellation in June of 2018. The star Felis is now included in the list of IAU-Approved star names!
In honor of the Felis constellation we created a sticker! The people from Doodle Tuesday-our live drawing event-named her Fern. Let us know which constellation is your favorite, or if you wish a lesser known constellation was a part of the official list.
